Douglas Jennings ARBS - Portrait & Figurative Sculptor
Gillian Wearing Project Background Information
Turner Prize winner Gillian Wearing’s new works are entirely wall based, consisting of a series of self portraits as various members of her immediate family.
This began with ‘Self Portrait as my Mother Jean Gregory’ and continues with images of her brother, father, sister, uncle and herself as a teenager and young child.Based on photos of family members when they were younger, Douglas used this reference to create sculpted portraits of each family member.
The clay sculptures were then moulded and cast into silicon rubber prosthetic masks.
Using locations and props Gillian seeks to adopt the identity of each family member, and her younger self, using the mask as a source of exploration and inspiration, resulting in a photographic exhibition, ‘Album’.
